SMART Program Application

Overview:

The UAMS Translational Research Institute (TRI) is pleased to invite applications for the 2027 Scholars in Mentored Applied Research & Translational Science (SMART) Program.

The SMART Program supports junior faculty committed to an academic career in clinical and translational science (CTS). The program's mission is to strengthen scholars' foundation in CTS, enhance their capacity for innovative translational research, and build competencies in study design and implementation.

Through a combination of didactic coursework, mentored research, and a capstone or thesis project, SMART Scholars gain the knowledge and experience necessary to design, conduct, and translate research into real-world health solutions. In addition, SMART participants will receive a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Science (MS-CTS) through the UAMS Graduate School by completing 36 credit hours, typically completed within two to three academic years.

What is the length of the program? 2-3 years, depending on selected track.
How do I apply? Applicants are required to complete the online application form, submit a career development/personal statement, submit a letter of support from their department chair, and their current CV.

Directions:

Submit your application by the deadline of 5:00PM on October 5, 2026 to be considered for the fall 2027 semester.
Apply to the UAMS Graduate school using the appropriate application available at Prospective Students | UAMS Graduate School.

Please upload your career development/personal statement to the SMART Program as one .pdf document for review. Please ensure that it includes the following components:

Career Development Statement/Personal Statement

Must show strong interest in clinical and/or translational research. Goals of the program and early career development must be clearly stated.
While you may not have a specific research plan outlined, some idea of research interests and goals should be stated.
Successful applicants will show a dedication to pursing future funding (e.g. K12, K23, R21, foundation grants, etc.) by the end of the master's program

Letter of Support from Department Chair

This letter should have a clear statement of commitment for two years of 30% FTE or three years of 20% FTE protected time for attending the program. Department chairs may nominate faculty for the program.
